Walking and the little jungle is teeming, but it is quiet.
I can hear the sound of the brook and then the waterfall,
but it is quiet. Kaazeep, Kaazeep, Kaazeeeep! Whooosh !!
She buzzes me, She has arrived.

image 2714

She lands in the tree just a foot behind my head, her mate
arrives promptly.

image 2715

She lost her leg by two tags being on one leg, one slipping
below the other. Year after year I have gotten to know her.
Tried to catch her with a mist net to remove the tags, but
she was on to me before I arrived. This is a really smart
little being.

image 2716

She doesn't like me to pat her, but she likes to lean her
warm soft body against my hand. It feels good.

image 2717

After she has had her regular fill of really, really,
good almonds.

image 2719

She will take time and sleep nearby ..

image 2718

And to think that with spacecraft flying overhead that
most have not learned yet respect these cousins is odd.

image 2720

I have not seen her in a long time now and I wonder about her. Is death an altered state of consciousness ? What is
it like to see and live as a Jay ? I can see that this
creature thinks and has emotion - not human but something
in common with us. And yet I recall researchers openly
making fun of Dr. Patterson's work with Koko. Seems odd
to be so quick to make a conclusion.

these are lovely. what a fab colour she is. i can understand her reluctance to be handled after the tagging incidents... but you have got a really good almond restaurant

She can fit three almonds in her beak (she tries for four), flies off and
buries them for future use and then she repeats it again. She has (had?)
three tags total. I have been thinking of better, non-invasive, ways to
keep these records and to add better tracking capabilities. The best would
be to use methods that just leave them be.

I missed this post along the way--really exquisite and sweetly written.
check out the video THE BIRD PEOPLE sometime, if you haven't already seen it.
it asks interesting questions about how bird research is handled--without drawing conclusions, and it contains exquisite images of birds and the humans who are obsessed with them.

Thank you for sharing your scrubjay friend. I, too, have a Scrubjay friend who visits me on a regular basis, is very bold and very, very smart. I often think that IT has trained ME! My friend likes peanuts in the shell, crackers, apple and banana. It has a mate that is fairly timid in comparison to it's boldness. It is used to the camera and I have many photos of this amazing bird. It spends time visiting with me on a nearly daily basis and will sit and converse in a quiet, complex chirping language. I often get the impression that it is telling me about it's day and fell very priveledged to have such a friend.
