Acton's Lock
[previous] :: [next]so this is the lock that is just the other side of the bridge with the stencil grafs on. the canal itself is the boundary between tower hamlets and hackney, and since it is the responsibility of british waterways there is no clue as to post code, although the pathway is on the hackney side. i took a couple of hundred photos, and covered another 3 or 4 locks, i can't remember but different walks - up to angel, down to bow. and of course various grafs and wildfowl. but anyway this is the lock you asked for, just say the word, plenty more where that came from, although they are all very similar This article has been viewed 23968 times in the last 3 years Peter: 8th Jun 2005 - 18:27 GMTlock photos! thanks elaine... i love the old-looking iron hardware where tehy hinge into the ground. are they human-powered or something? cool. very oldskool, for sure. i love how there are no people whatsoever in all the photos. elaine: 8th Jun 2005 - 18:30 GMTyou know me, a bugger for the no-people. sometimes there are a little troupe of street drunks that hang out at a bench, and there are lots of walkers and cyclers and dogs, so it's not exactly documentary style. yeah, you have to do the lock yourself if you come along in your boat, the lock keeper's cottages are privately owned by this lock Peter: 8th Jun 2005 - 18:36 GMTso cool! see, we could never have anything like this in america, as either were a) too stupid or b) too security-crazed to allow anyone to operate something like a lock by themselves, heh... elaine: 8th Jun 2005 - 18:38 GMTfrinstance this one elaine: 8th Jun 2005 - 18:45 GMTaha! i said i took about 200 pictures of the canal, locks, bridges, grafs, and birdies, and i did take a few of radio while we talked, and in one of them you can see andrea's hand and a foot, but noooo, i did not take any with the people jimenez: 8th Jun 2005 - 18:53 GMTthen let us see some of your two hudnred photographs i am sure some are very nice like i like the photograph of radio the dog better than the lock actually. do you have more odd ones? elaine: 8th Jun 2005 - 19:00 GMTbloody loads, actually. i thought you wanted people? i've just resized a load of people ones. what kind of odd do you want? (the people just look like people at a bus stop, so no loss there... elaine: 8th Jun 2005 - 19:11 GMTwhat am i thinking? loads of my postings already are canalside, frinstance; gasworks their reflections sixy trolls robotbuilding bridge grafs towpath grafs more canalside grafs and finally, but happily, recently, the lovely ducks swimming in the grass. sorry to be a self plugger, but you did ask! jimenez: 8th Jun 2005 - 19:13 GMTthose are good photographs i am just very interested in your neighborhood thats all it looks very senic i would love to see more photographs elaine: 8th Jun 2005 - 19:29 GMTwell i like it. london is a semi/post industrial city. big, mean and dirty, and this neighbourhood is not exactly posh, but it is interesting and i think friendly. people say london is not friendly but that is not my experience. people like to visit for holidays, though some of the stuff they do here they could do at home, like yanks seeing les miserables, why bother? it is the macdonalds of shows, same everywhere, near as dammit. i like the way there is a lot of organic, or less than deliberate evolution mixed in with the planned stuff. victoria park was one of the first public parks, well the first one in london not to be a royal park, there are commons for putting your sheep on, and the canals which used to be for transporting like trucks, but as times change uses change and adapt. there are prettier areas than bethnal green, but i did choose to live here Anonymous (dynamic-62-56-36-136.park-s46b.dslaccess.co.uk): 8th Jun 2005 - 19:38 GMTplus, btw, since the 13th of april i have done 46 postings, which is a fair few. you will have to be patient. there will be more as long as prevailing conditions of life and limb and the internet and peter and the US gorvernment holding off nuclear war instigation, and so on persist elaine: 9th Jun 2005 - 05:25 GMTi was just doing what i wanted to do - but i started feeling like i had to hurry up and put more on, then i thought, wait a minute, i already did fuzzytank: 9th Jun 2005 - 06:14 GMTno need to offer up countings and no need to put 'semi' in front of post industrial... there really is no better example and there is no need to hurry up one day my dad said i really dont think you can fill up all that memory in a day or even a weekend... so u went out an took 400 shots and it dint mean much elaine: 9th Jun 2005 - 06:55 GMTi know, normally... thanks fuzzy, u see i did you a tank? Lili: 12th Jun 2005 - 19:33 GMTStrange and beautiful Elaine. Nice iron members on the 'lock'. Tell that puppy not to drink the water ! elaine: 12th Jun 2005 - 20:03 GMTi don't think andrea has swam radio yet, but most of the dogs i know go in for a dip. there are places where they can get in and out easily which were put there for the horses that used to pull the barges - it seems that where they came up to bridges which had trains going overhead the horses would get such a fright they would jump in the water, and not be able to get out again, so they built steps for them Lili: 12th Jun 2005 - 20:39 GMTDogs and other quadrupeds (etc) are "designed" to deal with microbes and Lili elaine: 13th Jun 2005 - 07:47 GMTyeah, i think that's why she doesn't swim him yet, he is still a puppy. charlie, on the other hand, does get sick, but that is because of his preference for 'street food' - the more rancid the better. the canal is pretty clean, fishes live in it, and birds live on it Lili: 13th Jun 2005 - 08:23 GMTYum. So this site has inspired me to get out with my camera ? I have some Lili
elaine: 13th Jun 2005 - 15:06 GMTyesss, he puts a whole new twist on 'street food'. he takes off if you don't watch him like a hawk, and fine dines out the bins. he can eat a lot of rubbish in an ambient style while walking, but his last good chow down cost ian £75 and his bathroom carpet
