Tokyo Tower

- jeeff - Friday, June 3rd, 2005 : goo

i'd stare at the tokyo tower whenever it was in view. often it was obscured by the forest of skyscrapers, but you can see it looking south from the lawn of the imperial palace, near my work. in the daytime it's an insignificant blip on the horizon, but at night-time the glow is hypnotic. even from a distance you can sense the complexity of open metal latticework-- patterns within patterns within patterns. while i visited many times, i never went up.

the tower was erected in 1958, copying eiffel's design but adding an extra 13 meters to give it the nice round height of 333 meters, along with the title of world's tallest self-supporting steel structure. it was a symbol of japan's rebirth as an economic power, and the city's tallest landmark for many years. it also acted (and continues to act) as tokyo's central broadcasting tower, and a kitschy tourist attraction.

ps. it's painted orange and white in accordance with aviation safety guidelines.

the first two are like the eiffel tower was crossed with a balinese dancer, which is all well and good, but that third one is amazing, its like the structure went into hypertrophy like it was made by some insane scifi spider. cool

yeah, the complexity of the thing just blows my mind.

wow, just wow. thats quite a structure... that last shot is nice, too, as you can see the repeating, dense complexity of the structure. ive never seen or heard of this tower before. now i have. thanks jeeff!

it's funny, when the promo posters came out for that movie, the day after tomorrow, they put the one with the eiffel tower up all over tokyo. everyone in japan just assumed it was the tokyo tower.

Metoo: 6th Feb 2006 - 23:41 GMT

The eiffel tower is not in a quake zone like tokyo is.
