i saw some new long, text-only stickers on both washington and underhill this past weekend, but most were torn down or rained off before i could get back with a camera... they said "P E T B I R D '05"

elaine: peter, why are they called bodegas?

Peter: 24th May 2005 - 17:39 GMT

a bodega is a hispanic grocery... more like a mini-mart. usually open all night, with an atm out front. they sell sandwiches, beer/beverages, a limnited amount of groceries, lots of snacks, smokes, cleaning supplies, etc... theyre not necessarily hispanic, though... its just a catch-all name for corner stores that's sort of stuck to any such store around in nyc.

they usually look something like this:

and often lock up at night, to thwart thieves, doing all their business through bank drawers or bullet-proof glass.

thank you for clearing that up - with illustrations, no less!
