Color Abberations PDX
[previous] :: [next]I recently did some shooting in north portland, near St. John's. These images were timed exposures in minimal light, experimenting with color abberations on ccd's in limited lighting situations. The most common thread with the color was the appearance of red and green where those colors were not visible to the eye. These shots were exposed for 15-30 seconds around 2am on a clear night.

Peter: 23rd May 2005 - 13:12 GMTviva night photos... i love that last one, too, where the camera seems to make delicate halos and artifacts around the lights. sweet. thanks for posting! stillseeingred: 23rd May 2005 - 18:34 GMTThanks a ton for the comments. I was on the rocks about continuing the night photography, but thanks for the added encouragement. Cheers Justin stillseeingred: 29th May 2005 - 01:49 GMTI'm 99% sure that they are natural gas cannisters. That was a weird spot in between the NW Natural Gas plant and the ARCO gasoline storage place, so, it's some kind of fuel. Whatever it is, its heavily secured. Zag: 12th Oct 2005 - 07:10 GMTThe way the light's been captured coming off the lamps is uber cool... jennpants: 10th Sep 2007 - 20:10 GMTYeah, night shots are always fun. The effects are due to what's called "reciprocity failure." In short, the films chemicals are made to really only be exposed for a short amount of time...when you set up shots that are longer (say, when you're taking photos at night!) the chemicals begin to react differently than they normally would -- creating all those awesome colors and highlights that you don't see in person with the naked eye! Yeah, I'm an art nerd...keep up the awesome work! Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
