Forgotten Structure: ASPCA
[previous] :: [next]Walking near the Gowanus this morning I found this, an old ASPCA building...now long forgotten. The image shows a horse being beaten by a coach driver. An angel of kindness intervenes.

GGP: 11th May 2005 - 15:12 GMTI need to find it again and get back to you on that, Peter. It's off 3rd avenue, maybe st. marks? I'll get back w/ you on this asap. Stacey: 11th May 2005 - 17:24 GMTThis is on Baltic between Bond and Nevins. It used to be an adoption center and hospital. My grandfather used to sell fruit and veggies from his horse and carriage in the early 1900's and he used to keep it across the street from there (I would post the picture if I knew how). If I am not mistaken the police department housed their horses there also. I also remember it being a cobblestone street - not sure if they paved over it or not. Patricia Anne Malone: 30th Jul 2006 - 04:50 GMTMy Father, John Malone worked at the ASPCA on Butler Street in Brooklyn Loretta McKenna: 20th Apr 2007 - 13:25 GMTMy Father James McKenna worked at 233 Butler St. ASPCA...as a child I played along Gawanas Canal..waiting for his truck to pull in. He eventually was manager of shelterin LONG BEACH..until his death. Shelter was right next to Dunn & Bradstreet Co. Obviously he worked with John Malone ..name is very familiar. Stephanie: 11th Aug 2008 - 01:18 GMTAs a child I would walk past the ASPCA building and I would hear the yelping of puppies. I still remember the smells. I always wished I could have a puppy but we lived in the projects and having pets at that time was forbidden. Finally my parents got us a puppy at the ASPCA. We had to sneak him into our apartment in a canvas bag with the "GOOD and Plenty" candy logo on it. My mom got it as a premium give away.We named him Charlie. I am not sure what kind of dog he was. Surely he was a mutt but he was the cutest thing. But we only had him for a short while. Seems that he had some sort of puppie illness. My mom did not have the heart to bring him in to be put down so she asked my uncle-in-law to do it. He had to travel by subway all the way into the "city" to the ASPCA in the east 90's. My puppy came from the ASPCA on Butler St. and was taken to the ASPCA all the way uptown. We were so sad. After that I never wanted a puppy from that facility. Margaret Franzese: 4th Sep 2008 - 18:23 GMTThis building is on Butler St off 3rd Ave. in South Brooklyn. I lived around the corner on Baltic St as a young girl. I use to go there to visit the animals, and when I found one that was hurt I use to bring them there. Back in those days, animals were put to sleep if they were not adopted. I left Baltic St when I was 18, back in 1957, but have many memories of the area and those I knew. Today I am still an animal lover and help with the Humane Society of the US as well as the ASPCA. I have had many pets over the years and out lived them, what a terrible loss to lose a beloved animal. Today I still adopt recuse dogs to give them a happy and loving home Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
