Our Life in Wine Alley

- janette Lannox Ross - Sunday, July 15th, 2012 : goo

Our Name Lennox, William and Jean Lennox, My granda and gran they lived 20 Kellas street ,Wine Alley Govan Granda had Barrows (carts) they could be pulled by Hand , he hired them out for shillings and 6 pence for the day used to do "Flittings" granda was also a Lampliighter, they had four Boys and one Girl , sons Sammy , William, Michael (Mick) and Alex, Jean was the daughter, gran's sister lived facing the wee swing park in Lettoch street her hubby our uncle Mick was the park keeper,
I was born in 20 Kellas street 1445 and I disagree that the Wine alley contained anly people who were deprived, for I can tell you the whole of Britain was deprived, when I married I lived in a 5 bedroom Detatched newly built home , when I look back I know that Wine Alley days were the happiest days of my life , I never felt deprive, where you have love in your home you are never deprived ? My cousin Alexander Lennox his mother was Elizabeth Brown her father as I remember was john Brown so Alexander had two sets of grand parents lived in Kellas Street Wine Alley and he also has very fond memories of Wine Alley , sorry I only have photo.s of back courts where the Air raid shelters were built of Brown Brick, janette lennox (now Ross)

Hi folks in 1960-61 i lived in langlands rd. The wine ally was my milk run, i picked up my milk at the co-op at the end of langlands rd and off i went. In all the years of doing this i never felt in any danger from anyone in the wine ally far from it, if they were skint you did not get paid and if they were flush you got a big tip, i have great respect for everybody who lived there and wish them all the best jim

Hi I spent the later part of my teens in THE WINE ALLEY with friends who lived there i.e Betty Connor ,Dinah Campbell,Cathy Curry, Cathie Kidd,Josie Beattie to name only a few. Never at any time did we feel threatened or in any danger,if I mention the place I stay in now some people will give me that look as if to say oh that is a rough area,, yes there is the odd scuffle but in all the years we have stayed here, thats not bad
