The Coquettish Murals of Tehran
[previous] :: [next]More wandering the streets of Tehran and more pictures of murals..
This mural is a beautiful one put up by the municipality on a small city-owned building near my house that (I think) houses an electricity substation. While historically most city-funded murals were political or religious in nature, in the last few years there has been a massive amount of funding given to artists to paint city walls in other ways. Some take historical themes, like this one, depicting two men in turn of the century urban Tehran dress with lines of poetry above.
Of late, many of the murals have natural themes but also play with reality in different ways. Some show windows opening onto verdant fields, while others cover the entire side of buildings and depict a flap being opened and a picturesque village hiding beneath the facade. The picture above is not my own but from this photo essay: mianeh.net/photo-essay/tehran-murals-reflect-changing-times
The mural above depicts an arch with elements of traditional Iranian architecture alongside a woman lifting the Iranian flag. Unfortunately the owners of the gas station beside it decided to erect a small billboard covering part of it...
This last mural covers the door of a kindergarten with the image of a coyly smiling woman drawn in a typically Qajar Dynasty-era style. Not much to say here, just a cute painting! Franny Wentzel: 6th Jan 2012 - 06:24 GMTThat being said.. I like that last mural. Looks like something from a 1920s magazine cover. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
