Pan Am Building - Concepts & Construction

- Franny Wentzel - Friday, March 19th, 2010 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

The apex of mid-century modern skyscrapers in NYC, the Pan Am building was pretty much reviled from the start but it's actually a fairly nice looking building

image 40616

The initial concept was so much worse

image 40617

Luckily Emory & Roth let Walter Gropius do the design work...

The ever-so-optimistic concept model

Why yes... we'll build your design Mister Architect

image 40621

Lets show it to the public and pretend we care about what they think of it.

Nothing says fun like threading though a construction site on your morning commute

nice pictures!! i posted on my photo series, a suggestion that some of us from Citynoise, meet in philadelphia, and divide up the city in sections. 2 people per team would fan out across the city, and photograph whatever comes to mind

Franny Wentzel: 19th Mar 2010 - 18:33 GMT

Just one more construction photo...

I half expect to see looking down from the top...

This is great stuff! Thanks for posting. I still don't understand how they fit that giant building into that space.

Asparagi

Not a big fan of this veggie, but it makes for a great photo! Asparagus in all its glory. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagus FYI - the plural of asparagus is asparagus (not asparagi)
