Pan Am Building - Concepts & Construction

- Franny Wentzel - Friday, March 19th, 2010 : goo

The apex of mid-century modern skyscrapers in NYC, the Pan Am building was pretty much reviled from the start but it's actually a fairly nice looking building

The initial concept was so much worse

image 40617

Luckily Emory & Roth let Walter Gropius do the design work...

The ever-so-optimistic concept model

Why yes... we'll build your design Mister Architect

Lets show it to the public and pretend we care about what they think of it.

nice pictures!! i posted on my photo series, a suggestion that some of us from Citynoise, meet in philadelphia, and divide up the city in sections. 2 people per team would fan out across the city, and photograph whatever comes to mind

Just one more construction photo...

This is great stuff! Thanks for posting. I still don't understand how they fit that giant building into that space.

Pan Am went bankrupt in December of 1991, victim of mismanagement and ultimately, the Gulf War's spike in fuel prices. There have been numerous (unsuccessful) attempts to revive the brand name by third parties as late as 2012.

TWA was bought out by American Airlines shortly after the turn of the century, ceasing operations under their name in December of 2001.
