By 1970 tensions had cooled down just enough for a look at both East & West Berlin - though the author did spend a little time at Headquarters...

I seriously doubt jientsonitg Carz and TVs would resolve the energy problems for very long, if at all. The global dependence on the Electrical Grid to keep the lights on in the Big Shities, to power water pumping stations and sewage treatment plants is a much larger issue, and while its likely to take a bit longer to fail than the automotive model, it's equally doomed in the medium term here. Further problematic after the failure of the electrical grid is the dependence on the Industrial Ag model, the Green Revolution and the yields possible utilizing fossil fuel based fertilizers and copious quantities of inorganic phosphates that also are running in short supply.Taking the Carz off the road won't do much besides kick the can down the road a piece on some of the deeper problems of the extraordinary energy dependence of industrial society. Besides that, the social dislocation resultant from the failure of this transportation and distribution model cannot be easily overcome. The railroads are not capable at this point of picking up the slack, the physical infrastructure and layout of most places is not set up well for bicycles, and we hae a ong way to go to breed up enough horses to revert to that transport model anytime too soon. One we run outta available debt money to finance this model, the systems are going to start cascade fail, and we'll be damn fortunate if we can halt the cascade even at a 1750s era technological level. That is the unfortunate truth here.RE
