Walking in Auckland

- Amanda - Wednesday, April 10th, 2002 : goo

The central business district waits for me early, soaring from the ashphalt with a facade of impersonality. The dichotomy within it is held tight in my minds eye, Queen & Fort streets presented as my point. The contrast of suits & slackers oddly pleases me as I fit into neither category, going about my business at work or play.

It presents more than I can absorb so early & must be dripped stealthily into my system along with my morning coffee. I lack any sign of suburban neurosis & am in fact, pleased with my abode far from these streets. The city isn't better, it's just more exciting.

If you walk backwards facing the city, it gets smaller in scale. Scale changes everything. It's no longer so overwhelming, intimidating. The lights seep into the air, coloured luminescent snowflakes. Dust from construction sites mingles with the uniformity, smearing & teasing the clean lines.

I can turn my back on it when i return home. It stands rigid & proud, knowing that I must return. The city is in my blood.
